The Modern Maker Letter

Get your a$$ on the treadmill 🍑

Hey Reader,

This email is gonna be yuge. But packed with value. 'Cos I want you to win. Buckle up.

WHERE SAWDUST MEETS THE TREADMILL.

You go to IKEA to buy a table. It costs $150.

The table is the end product.

That is a “screenshot” of time.

What’s more valuable is the carpenter.

The guy who spent hours making the table.

  • What decisions did he make?
  • What mistakes did he make?
  • What lessons came out of it?
  • What scraps did he throw away and why?
  • Why did he pick those dimensions?
  • What happened on the call with the IKEA manager as he extracted requirements?
  • What tools did he use?

The process of “cutting the wood” to craft the table.

Creates SAWDUST.

Sawdust proves your competence in business.

And attracts leads.

Your IKEA table is your calendar.

Pick 1 event in your calendar and ask yourself.

  • What was the problem on the call the client had?
  • How did you solve it?
  • What did you learn?
  • What advice did you give?
  • Did you make any mistakes?

SAWDUST.

Remember.

The “end product is the table at IKEA”. The process of building the table is the sawdust.

So each week.

  1. Find a problem
  2. Write the 3x content types (constraints matter)
  3. Run them through the TREADMILL (wait for it - below)
  4. Find another problem
  5. Rinse repeat

I love constraints.

So I only write with 3 content types in mind.

They’re enough to engineer millions of posts for multiple platforms a week.

CONTENT TYPE:

  1. Advice
  2. Personal Opinion
  3. Story Telling

So what on earth is the treadmill, Reader?

A masterful exercise that keeps you sexy, lean and fit for content.

TREADMILL:

  1. A case study → How I helped John with his {problem}
  2. A story → {problem/topic} - my 1 priority when I started
  3. A lesson → 1 lesson I learned from {problem}
  4. A mistake → 2 mistakes I made when {problem}
  5. A win → This week, I helped 1 client with their {problem}
  6. An educational view → 5 best ways to tackle {problem}
  7. A template → 1 template I use to win over {problem}
  8. An advantage → 1 advantage of having a {problem}
  9. An example → 3 examples of {problem}
  10. An observation → 1 observation of {problem}
  11. A contrarian belief → Stop doing {problem}.

Now Reader, let’s tie this into an equation.

EQUATION:

Problem x Content Type = Post

Optional : Treadmill

Week of 20th August - 25th August (Jacob)

PROBLEMS (taken from my students' questions on Slack):

  • Ben: I don’t know what to write about, as I have information overload? (Note: This question birthed this email)
  • Sonke: Shall I introduce “addiction” to my pillars?
  • Alex: How do I make a lead magnet?
  • Sree: I don’t know how to price my services?
  • Balaji: Say I did my screening wrong, and I’m on the call with a tire kicker, how do I politely say go away?

Here are 2 examples:

Balaji.

Problem: Decline a bad prospect on a call

Content Type: Advice

Hook: 1 way to decline a bad prospect on a call without hurting your reputation

Treadmill:

A case study → How I helped Balaji decline a bad prospect on a call

A story → My number 1 priority was declining calls with bad prospects

A lesson → 1 lesson I learned from declining calls with bad prospects

etc.

Sree.

Problem: I don’t know how to price my services

Content type: Story telling

Hook: Yesterday, I helped my client price her services with a multi-tiered offer as a graphic designer (here’s how):

Treadmill:

A case study → How I helped Sree price her services

A story → My number 1 priority was having the right pricing for my service

A lesson → 1 lesson I learned from pricing my services

etc.

Now here’s the content calendar to keep things systemized.

CONTENT CALENDAR

Monday - ADVICE

Tuesday - PERSONAL OPINION

Wed - ADVICE

Thurs - ADVICE

Fri - STORY TELLING

Sat - ADVICE

Sun - ADVICE

NOTES

If you can find 7 problems, then you don’t have to run on the treadmill immediately.

Hence, why it’s optional.

You apply the 7 problems into the equation. (Problem x Content Type = Post).

But if you do decide to run on the treadmill.

Then you have content at great leverage for the future.

It can get tiresome. So you’ll see how up for it, you are.

TASK

Pick 3-5x problems.

Dunk them into the equation.

Let me know what happens :)
